Question question about gear

Hi.

I'm completely new to GW, so some gear has me a bit confused. I just bought the GW trilogy on a whim and got a lot of extra gear with it.

For example i got "Luminescent Scepter" and the thing is it says "requires 9 Domination Magic" but i could still use it from the start.
So what exactly does the requirements mean if you still can use it even though you have less than 9 in your Domination Magic skill?

Thx in advance for the help.

Weapon/shield/etc. "requirements" are just to get the full effect.

For instance, that wand you have says it deals 11-22 damage. If you don't meet that requirement, you won't deal that damage. I think damage for wands and staves that don't meet req. is like 4-7 damage or something.

http://www.guildwiki.org/Requirement a nice table here shows you the damage penalty for equipping a weapon for which you do not meet the requirement.

Keep in mind that the requirement only applies to damage for weapons, armor for shields, and energy for focuses. You will still get the full amount of any other bonuses on the weapon even if you don't meet the requirement. For example, if a shield has +30 hp, you will get the full amount of health even if you don't meet the requirement for the full amount of armor. That's one of the nice benefits of the /bonus weapons for a new player.

Yep, basically only the benefit belonging to the line that has the "Requires x [attribute]" will be penalized if you don't meet that attribute requirement.

thx for all the answers, it has been really helpfull.

However i have some problem with the skill bar and debuffs on enemies (in prophecy) and thought it was best to post them here over creating a new thread.

Is there any way to have your abilities grey out when you can't use them, becaus I find it kind of annoying when skills you can't use doesn't differ from when you can use them.
I have looked around in options but haven't find a way to make them grey out when you for example don't have enough energy to use them.

The other thing I wonder is if there is any way you can make it visible which debuffs and buffs a enemy has on it. It is especially annoying that you can't see it when you play as a mesmer and isn't sure if you can use "Shatter Delusions" or not.
Same thing here I have looked through options but haven't find anything to make buffs and debuffs on enemies visible.

Again thx in advance for all your helpfull anwsers

Re: unusable abilities: No. Not in an unmodded game. You can see the recharge status, but that's it. I also doubt a mod for it is possible, since most mods I've seen are texmod based, and that can only change textures, and would get no input from the game to base the changes on.

Re: effects on enemies: you can see whether the enemy is enchanted (yellow triangle), hexed (purple triangle) or has a condition (brown triangle) on the skill bar. Some visible clues exist for the conditions, but really, they are very hard to recognize in battle.

afaik you cant grey them out, but skills with a recharge time have some kind of "clock" animation on its icon, indicating that the skills cant be used during that recharge time (i think its very clear).
